I do it this way: CTRL+CLICK on thumbnail of first layer and CTRL+SHIFT+CLICK on thumbnail of second layer. So the selections are added. Then create a layer behind the rest and do a stroke (Edit > Contour, choose center) to the selection. You can also fill the selection with a solid color and add the stroke with layer effects. Cheers!
