Master post about drawing and inking in Photoshop
Choose your language / Elige tu idioma:englishespañol

I think it´s a good idea to create some master posts to gather all the information I have about some specific topics. I will update them from time to time. Here we go with the first compilation about Photoshop drawing, I hope you will find it useful :)

Vectorial drawing in Photoshop (basic)

Photoshop inking

As you can see in the picture, this is a Photoshop inking without modulated lines, using vectorial drawing tools, from a traditional drawing. You have to create the strokes with Photoshop vectorial drawing tools, and then to contour them.

Advantages:

  • You don´t need a vast knowledge of Photoshop.
  • It´s very quick.
  • It´s very clean.

Disadvantages:

  • The appearance is quite basic, althought it will look better with color.

Vectorial drawing in Photoshop (advanced)

Quite similar to the previous one, but we create fill-in areas instead of lines. It´s always good to have a pencil sketch as starting point, though it´s not essential.

Advantages:

  • The inking itself has a great streght, we can use it without color.
  • The result is very clean.

Disadvantages:

  • It takes quite a long time.
  • It´s not very funny, and a bit uncomfortable in my opinion.

Hand made drawing in Photoshop with a Wacom Cintiq

With the mouse is practically impossible draw by hand, so you´ll need a pen tablet, which isn´t perfect either but it helps a lot. If you really want to make a good profit of this method you´ll need a
Wacom Cintiq (a monitor on which you can directly draw), out of reach for most pockets.

Advantages:

  • It´s challenging, very funny.
  • It´s very quick when you get used to it.
  • Almost as sensitive as traditional drawing, but cleaner.

Disadvantages:

  • The result is not as clean as using vectorial tools.
  • You have to invest in hardware: a Wacom tablet, or a Wacom Cintiq if you can afford it.

Traditional drawing and retouching in Photoshop

Traditional Drawing

If you´re good with pencil and paper this will be probably the most comfortable method for you. The key is to be very clean at drawing. Afterwards, with just a few retouches in Photoshop the line will be clean and well-defined. This way we´ll get an inking effect.

Advantages:

  • Nothing as accurate as traditional pencils.
  • You can skip the inking, it´s the same drawing retouched to make it look like ink.

Disadvantages:

  • You must be very technical at drawing.
  • The final inking is never as clean as the digital one, no matter how clean you can draw.

  8. Manu Says:

A vale, ya me he dado cuenta que trabajais juntos, perdona, me callo. Saludos.

  9. Sergio Ordonez Says:

  10. Ekaterina Says:

That’s great great idea to gather and analyse all this!

Firstly when I found your tuts I didn’t know what method to choose – I have wacom, not bad with pencil, but what is faster/better… And finally the scheme is: scanned pencil sketch (not super-accurate, conceptual), then draw in Photoshop with tablet (brush + eraser:)) and only when I need to draw ideal shape on big areas I use Photoshop’s vector (stroke or fill).

  11. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Im glad you like Ekatherina :)

Its exactly what I was doing before buying my Cintiq. If you can I suggest the 12″, its small but you really will start to enjoy.

  12. Diana Says:

Gracias.

    Hello
Your works are as allways very stylish and very pro.
But, as i’m a designer too and the same age as you. i Think that you fall in a designer problem known as “typing” which means you use the same style and features on your drawing.
exple: on the pictures above ,if you take a look on the eyes, they are nearly all the same design (in fact 2 types, round and oval).
let me advise you my friend. try to variate the characters style expl: disney style, simpson style, dragonball style.. and i’m sure you will be the dream of all communication boxes.
    sheers.

  15. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Hello my friend, thanks a lot for the positive criticism.

I have think about this for long time,is good having a style well defined? or is better being more versatile?

I think for my business right now is better having a defined style, mainly because its what the clients ask and secondly because it makes the order quite straigh forward.

I can manage other styles anyway, its just this one sells better.

    Cheers
    Sergio

  16. Pablo Says:

Hola Sergio!!

    Saludos.

I’m trying to extract the lines for the retouching and I’m getting the message:

The object “layer Capa 1″ is not currently available.

    ???

  24. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Hello talos, it have something to do with the name of the layers, try renaming the layer to “Capa 1″.

  25. talos Says:

Now it says the object background is not available !!

  26. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Its the same thing, just rename the layer.

If this doesnt work, click this link and download the action or do it manually: http://sergitosuanez.deviantart.com/art/Extract-lines-PS-action-17716531

  27. talos Says:

    Doesn’t work.I’ve had enough.Forget it.

  28. Sergio Ordonez Says:

    You are welcome :)

  29. Teppo Saarikoski Says:

Nice compilation of different tecnhiques there Sergio :)

I have one method of doing inking which actually misses here, and which I’ve found quite useful myself:

First draw the contours with strokes in Illustrator, and after it’s done go to Object -> Expand (with the strokes selected) and do the thickness variations with the fill-in vectors. The result is clean and still in vectors, so one can also scale it if needed. This method is rather quick, too (took me a couple of hours for the first time). :)

how do you get the sharp end on teeth and corners? I only see brush on in your video.

  32. Sergio Ordonez Says:

What tutorial are you talking about?

  33. ichnicht Says:

and I dont understand how you bend a line. In the bottom teeth you draw a line and bend it down or something.

plz bring light in my dearkness :D

  34. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Buddy, if you don´t tell what is the tutorial and the part where you have doubts I hardly will be able to help you.

  35. ichnicht Says:

doh, shure, you can’t read my mind :D

I talk about “Hand made drawing in Photoshop with a Wacom Cintiq”.
May you can show the first video in normal speed or with some comments?

I can’t understand how you can make sharp edges with brush and eraser.
And it looks, live u bend some lines like with the pen tool.

Sorry my english, Im german and bad in english :/

  36. Sergio Ordonez Says:

Sorry, Youtube doesn´t allow longer videos, anyway its quite straight forward I just use default brushes. The key is using a Wacom Cintiq and an high resolution canvas.

  37. Melanie Says:
